Definition:

a severe mental disorder characterized by some, but not necessarily all, of the following features: emotional blunting, intellectual deterioration, social isolation, disorganized speech and behavior, delusions, and hallucinations.

Symptoms:

Positive
  1. Distortions in thought content. (delusions)
  2. Hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling, or seeing things that don’t exist. (Hallucinations)
  3. Disorganized speech or behavior.
Negative
  1. Losing interest in everyday activities. (Bathing, grooming, etc.)
  2. Feeling out of touch with other people, family, or friends.
  3. Having little emotion or inappropriate feelings in certain situations.

Causes:

There is no specified cause for schizophrenia; however research suggests that both men and women are at equal risk of developing the disease and that it may come from a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Treatment:

While there are a number of helpful treatments available; medication remains the cornerstone of treatment for people with schizophrenia. These medications are often referred to as antipsychotics since they help decrease the intensity of psychotic symptoms. Many health-care professionals prescribe one of these medications, sometimes in combination of one or more other psychiatric medications, in order to maximize the benefit for the person with schizophrenia.

Anecdote:

The Beginning of a new month, and find out that I was dianosed with shizophrenia. I never thought that i would be 1 of 100 people that would ever get it.
Its so weird waking up and not really knowing where I am, not knowing whos around me, seeing things that arent really there, and hearing things that are in my head but arent infront of me or connected to electronic. I thought and I didnt know what was next. I have more then shizophrenhia really set me to thinking if I really had something to wait for next. I was told that it could be cured, but it would be still there, it just takes time getting used to, and actually living with it. I am 14 years old. I have bipolar, paranoia, shizophrenhia, and its my main problem well one of them, I never know what to do. Feeling so afraid of going anywhere alone, and afraid to talk to people.
Shizophrenia, it feels like its taken over me, and who I am as a person.
