Definition:

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder, it is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear.

Symptoms:

  • Feelings of terror that strike suddenly with no reason
  • Heart pounds
  • Feel weak, sweaty, faint, or dizzy
  • Hands may tingle or feel numb
  • May have nausea or chest pain
  • Loss of control


Causes:

Panic attacks can be caused from several different fears. Panic disorders usually run in the family.
  • Mitral Valve Prolapse
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Stimulant Use
  • Medication Withdrawal


Treatment:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
    • Focuses on the thinking patterns and behaviors that are sustaining or triggering the panic attacks.
  • Exposure Therapy
    • You are exposed to physical sensations of panic in a safe and controlled enviroment, giving you the opportunity to learn healthier ways of coping.
  • Medications
    • Antidepressants
